Can Beckham do the job?

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

LA Galaxy have conceded 8 goals in their last two games even though Becks played full time. The point I’m trying to make is that Becks cannot do the job alone and he needs better players to support him upfront.

So far Donovan is not doing that and none of the other players are. It’s just pathetic to watch Galaxy play. What Galaxy need to do to salvage themselves is to get another striker who can score goals. That way, with Beckham producing the crosses the new guy can put the ball in the net.

Man Utd fury at Reds over Heinze

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

I really don’t see why Ferguson is stressing over the Heinze issue. It’s not like he went to Liverpool after all. I think Fergie should concentrate more on winning matches. What i think is ridiculous is the fact that even though it’s not written in the contract that Heinze cannot join Liverpool from Man Utd, the FA still ruled that Heinze cannot join Liverpool. I really sympathize with Heinze…I mean no club should dictate where a player can and cannot play.
I really think Ferguson is just being arrogant as always. And how come it was so easy for Tevez to join Man Utd even with all the saga behind his transfer?

Chivas USA takes fight to Galaxy, Beckham

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Sooner or later, there was going to be a brawl involving David Beckham.

It arrived Thursday night.
In an ugly scene just before halftime of a 3-0 Chivas USA victory over the Galaxy, an already heated soccer rivalry between the teams was raised in temperature by more than a few degrees as a punch was thrown, a head butt was delivered and two players were ejected.

Ronaldo slims down, weight problems down to illness

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Ronaldo’s weight problems in recent years were caused by hypothyroidism, but pills and a new training regime have made the Brazil striker much fitter, his club AC Milan have said.

Ronaldo was ridiculed by fans and the press during his time at Real Madrid when his weight ballooned and he became known as “el gordo” (the fat one).

He moved to AC Milan in January in a bid to rebuild his career and has since lost 5.5 kgs.

The weight loss programme, coupled with a hamstring injury, means he will not be fit for Sunday’s Serie A kick-off at Genoa but he is expected to be back in three weeks.

Sunderland complete Cole capture

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Former Manchester United forward Andy Cole has signed a one-year deal with Sunderland after passing a medical with the Premier League club. The ex-England striker, 35, was a free agent after leaving Portsmouth earlier this summer, but is unlikely to feature at the weekend as he is not match fit.

Manager Roy Keane played with Cole during his time with United.

“He has had a fair few clubs, but I have played with Andy and I know he likes to win,” said Keane.

He is someone I have always got on all right with – it might be different now I am a manager, that might change.

Platini wants Euro place for Cup

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Uefa president Michel Platini is set to propose a shake-up of Champions League qualification in England by handing a place to the FA Cup winners. Under new proposals, the Cup winners – rather than the team that finishes fourth in the Premier League – would go into Europe’s elite cup competition.

It comes after Platini’s plan to reduce qualification spots for any one country from four to three was rejected.

However, this proposal could be viewed as a compromise.

The plans will be unveiled by Platini next week, before the group stage of the Champions League gets underway.

Man Utd eyeing Berbatov – agent

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Manchester United are interested in signing Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov, claims the player’s agent. Emil Dantchev told Bulgaria’s Darik Radio: “We had a 90-minute meeting with Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Damien Comolli.

“They informed us that there’s a query from Manchester United about the possibility of Berbatov joining them.

“They told us they will have a meeting in the next day or two to decide his future.”

New era dawns in La Liga

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Pundits invariably fall back on the events of the previous season when making their predictions for the new term ahead. The problem confronting La Liga watchers, however, is that 2006/07 threw up so many twists and turns that nothing should be taken for granted this time out.

League champions Real Madrid looked out for the count back in March only to produce an irresistible late title surge, while perennial top-flighters Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad set their sights on top-half finishes only to slide inexorably towards relegation.

And as the title holders and bitter city rivals Atletico Madrid limber up for Saturday’s curtain-raising derby, prudence would appear to be the watchword for anyone daring to foretell what lies ahead.

Ronaldinho to be granted dual nationality

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

MADRID, Aug 24 (Reuters) – Ronaldinho said on Friday he was determined to avoid the mistakes of last season and make this one his best at Barcelona.

The club also announced that the Brazilian will be granted dual nationality on Monday and thus free up one of the three berths in the squad permitted for non-European Union players.

And the 27-year-old said he is intent on displaying peak form for the new campaign. ‘I’m going to make a big effort to ensure that this is my best season,’ he told a news conference.

‘I’m really pleased with the way things have gone in pre-season. When you are in good physical shape, things come more easily and every day I feel more motivated.’

Everton fans vote for Kirkby move

Posted by kwame on August 24, 2007

Everton fans have voted in favour of the club’s proposed move to a new stadium in Kirkby. The club balloted more than 36,000 supporters on the move, which chief executive Keith Wyness described as “the deal of the century”.

Everton vowed to abide by the outcome of the vote but 59% of the 25,761 votes returned supported the proposals.

The 50,000-seater new stadium will be financed alongside supermarket giant Tesco and the local Knowsley council.

It is part of a planned £400m redevelopment of a 32-hectare (80-acre) site.
